May Meeting

Thursday, May 15, 2-3pm via Zoom

To begin our meeting

Before we take a brief hiatus for the summer, we’d like to dedicate part of this monthly meeting to reflecting on Ability Plus’s work during the past year. We’ll highlight major milestones, topics covered, and member contributions. We hope you’ll join us for this moment of gratitude.

For group discussion

As we celebrate Mental Health Awareness Month, we invite you to join us for engaging and uplifting conversations designed to build connection, celebrate laughter and joy, and foster inclusive dialogue around disability and overall wellbeing.

Breakout Room 1: Laughter

We’ll explore how humor can be used to spark dialogue, ease discomfort, and encourage more open conversations about disability and mental health. Have an experience to share? A lighthearted moment that helped create understanding? We’d love to hear it. Here are some discussion prompts:

  • In what ways can laughter be a bridge rather than a barrier when talking about personal, sensitive , or unfamiliar topics?
  • Describe a time when you have used or observed humor as a tool to help ease an uncomfortable conversation about disability or mental health.
  • Are there boundaries or "dos and don’ts" you’ve noticed when humor has been used as a way to break the ice around disability-related topics?
  • What are some examples of media (TV shows, memes, articles, etc.) that you think use humor well to raise awareness—and which ones miss the mark?

Breakout Room 2: Finding Joy

In this space, we’ll turn inward and look at what brings each of us joy—big or small. Whether it’s a hobby, favorite memory, or something that grounds you during tough times, sharing joy is a powerful way to connect and celebrate our collective humanity. Here are a few breakout questions to get the conversation going:

  • What is something—big or small—that brings you true joy in your day-to-day life?
  • Can you think of a time when joy helped you get through a difficult period? What sparked that joy?
  • Are there any rituals, hobbies, or creative practices you turn to when you need a mental or physical health boost?
  • What does "joy" mean to you personally, and how do you intentionally make space for it?
